Practice Interviews
You may have heard the saying, "practice makes perfect." While no one expects you to be perfect in an interview, they do expect you to be prepared. Practicing for interviews is one of the best ways to boost your confidence and feel ready for an upcoming interview.
Interview Prep (formerly called InterviewStream) is a web-based practice interview platform. As a Virginia Tech student, you have access to this platform through the Career and Professional Development office. This is an effective way to increase your interviewing skills. You can learn more by visiting the Interview Prep page on our main website. If you are already familiar with the platform, you can register or login now using your VT email address.
You've taken the time to do all of your research, taken notes, and probably wrote out responses to several commonly asked questions. What's next? Say it out loud! You don't want to sound robotic in your responses, and the best way to avoid that is by answering practice questions out loud. You can do this with a friend or family member, a mentor, or even your dog, if you prefer! The important thing is just to say the words out loud.
Once you've utilized Interview Prep, and practiced on your own a few times, the last step we recommend is scheduling a mock interivew.
Mock interviews are offered by advisors in our office. They are a great way to practice your interview verbally, then reflect on it through self-evaluation and feedback from the advisor. These interviews are by appointment only and can be conducted in-person, by phone, or Zoom. You can schedule an appointment through Handshake.
